TWENTY AND NOT COUNTING
For Sam and Dawn
Why bother at all with numbers?
Twenty or fifty years will seem
in time like one whole day
too brief to be believed.
What is the past except
what happened once to let
what’s happening happen?
No more than that.
For those
who love, the sum of one
plus one is always one,
and time becomes irrelevant.
What’s next is up to God.
Today for you the sum
of one plus one still stays
at one plus Sam, Anna and Sarah.
You love each other near,
and yet the times when you’re
together seem to pass
so quickly even when you make
the time.
You want those moments
never to be over.
That’s all
that matters now.
Or ever.
